Biography

Leslie Weir talks fondly about her first librarian job at the Côte St. Luc Public Library, near Montreal. In addition to a huge play area for children, the library had an aquarium and a floor-to-ceiling bird cage, which Weir freely admits she didn't particularly like cleaning. There was nearly a staff revolt, she recalls, when the chief librarian tried to bring in a monkey.

In 2003, Weir began a mandate as the University of Ottawa's chief librarian, and she wants to bring more of that spirit to the University's Library Network. The first woman to occupy the position, she earned a master's in library science from McGill University. Although Weir was extensively involved in the development of information technology during her various assignments at the National Library of Canada and at the University of Ottawa, she still focuses a lot of her passion and energy in making the library a “people place.”
